Jimmy Kimmel at the 2025 Oscars, Alexei Navalny buried twice, how Sally Rooney tells the truth
Mick LaSalle, “Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump: How the new president could influence future movies and TV shows,” San Francisco Chronicle (July 22).
“…if Trump wins, we’ll have something new in American cultural life, though it will disguise itself in terms of nostalgia and tradition. Filmmakers will start off 2025 terrified of explicitly criticizing the administration, but soon they’ll fear being even implicitly critical. There will be no villains from the planet Zob wearing blond comb-overs. For the most part, movies will be entirely escapist, though a handful of action movies will express despair through bitter nihilism . . . Sure, here and there, some rapper or pop star or Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars will make a pointed remark against Trump, and the fact that these people won’t disappear the next day will be considered proof that we live in a free country.”
