There are times when I believe “I Count the Tears” by the Drifters is the greatest record ever made. I’ve never heard Cash’s version. But I have been “lobbying” for about 30 years for Springsteen to cover it. Live, on record...it would have been a good fit for his soul covers album...or added to “The Promise.” Also, my students last year watched Harvey Pekar on Letterman, and picked up on Letterman’s manipulative smarminess much more quickly than I ever did.
