Excellent piece! I love the MTM episode where Mary confronts Lou and he says something like, "you got spunk..." and Mary and the audience expect a warm moment and then he finishes off with..."I hate spunk!" Did you ever watch "Barney Miller"? It was a little more freewheeling, I think. Hal Linden probably had the best moustache in TV history, narrowly beating out Tom Selleck and Ernie Kovacs. Thanks for this.

The real stars were the regular group of writers that kept feeding memorable vignettes and scenes that retained group dynamics and overall cast cohesion with weekly interlopers (the guest "stars").

Good to see Paul Sand and his short-lived sit-com via MTM Prods get a mention here. Sand got some early improv love on stage with "Story Theater." Yet the art of improv didn't really reach us until CBC's Canadian production of SCTV that was syndicated down here in the Lower 48 in often half-hour bites from their 90-minute Canadian air dates:

Can't wait for a piece on Sgt. Bilko/Phil Silvers. Even when it's written half a century ago ! I've seen most of the episodes, yes, on YouTube, and i can tell: you never get enough.

Thank you, Greil, for the flashback. "It was media shock: one of those times when, having been so exposed to the rules of a given form that you have completely accepted them, you find the rules blasted apart—blasted apart by what, later on, seems like the most marginal alteration." A central tenet of so much of your work to come. It's great to see you honing your critical skills on other areas of pop culture and readying your mind to process and appreciate the looming changes in the world of mid-70's rock music, and being able to link them back to moments in Western cultural history--leading to your insights so wonderfully expressed in Lipstick Traces. Thanks!!

Nice to remember over the air TV from back when. So many more choices today, including identifying yourself to your streaming service, selecting which feed you want for the game, and if you want to watch it live or resume from your last watch. So confusing. Miss just plugging in a TV set anywhere and getting a fuzzy screen. Ah, analog!

Again! Fun memories. There's one, though, that I've never heard of! Paul Sand in Friends & Lovers. In 1974 I would've been about 27 and living in Honolulu (where, admittedly, I didn't watch much TV). Maybe it wasn't shown there at all? Seems so odd that I haven't heard of it. Anyway, thanks again!

My most surprising takeaway from this is that in the mid-1970s, you - Greil Marcus - could be found at home watching TV (sitcoms, yet!) on a Saturday night. It's just not how I pictured you, then. Figured you'd be at a concert, or at the very least, a movie like "Night Moves" or maybe a Cassavettes film. I figured TV was for lowbrows like myself. So, thank you, I now feel like I am worthy of reading you. Well, more worthy.

I remember on The Jeffersons, when George's neighbor, I forget his name (a white guy) kissed a black woman. Shazam!

Probably Tom Willis, played by I don't remember who, kissing his wife, played by Roxie Roker (Lenny Kravitz's mother)

That was it, thanks. There was an audible "wow" from the audience when that kiss landed.
